NOTICE: The Town of Chincoteague is improving the sidewalks downtown during the winter of 2013. The imprint of Misty's hoof was cut out of the sidewalk for the repairs and should be replaced soon.
Illinois author Marguerite Henry's 1947 children's series about a real-life Chincoteague pony named Misty resulted in a 1960 Hollywood movie. The movie was premiered simultaneously in Hollywood and Chincoteague. Marguerite Henry and Misty were the guests of honor on the island and Misty's hoof prints were cast in the sidewalk cement directly in front of the theatre box office.
Henry's books and the movie are still available at gift shops around the island.
Over 50 years later, the theatre is now known as the Island Theatre (4074 South Main Street, Chincoteague Island, VA 23336). Misty's hoof prints are still plainly visible in the sidewalk and may be viewed and photographed anytime. There is no fee.
A bronze statue of Misty is located in the waterfront park across the street from the theatre (see Waymark).
Misty died in the 1970s and was preserved. She can be seen at the Museum of Chincoteague Island (757-336-6117) at 7125 Maddox Boulevard on the way to the beach, across from McDonalds.
