A cathedral was man's attempt to display faithfulness to God. Cities and denominations would "race" to build the highest (reaching toward heaven, closer to God). The gothic (pointed) arch and buttressing allowed architects to design even higher and lighter. This is one of last ones started & completed. It is a relatively new cathedral.
There are many sculptures, including one of Darth Vader from Star Wars. Each and every gargoyle is different and hand carved. Some of the finest stained glass craftsmanship can be found here. And there are extensive gardens that are well maintained.
If you can, get a tour of the tower for an incredible view of the Federal City below. The church was constructed on the highest ground in Washington DC (Mount Saint Albans). The grounds may be higher than the Washington Monument.
