Midsomer Priory is home to four nuns. Mother Thomas Aquinas is found strangled in the hen coup and Barnaby investigates. Not only is there a murder, but £60,000 of silver is missing from the safe.
The Priory was donated by Sir Anthony Vertue and would be a valuable asset if the nuns left. Father Behan, the priest who hears confessions at the Priory, has tried to get the nuns to move, but to no avail. Father Behan is later found strangled at the Presbitry.
The missing silver is found in an antiques shop, but it had not been stolen, it had been sold by the late Mother Thomas Aquinas in order to pay bills. The ownership of the Priory also takes a twist when it is realised that the novitiate, Sister Catherine, is a descendant of Sir Anthony Vertue and would inherit the Priory if all the other nuns were deceased.
The case is solved when Barnaby investigates some vandalism at the Priory that predates the murders. A teenage couple had been disturbed by Mother Julian and the boys trousers had gone missing. In the trouser pocket was the boy’s driving licence. It appears that Mother Julian knew the boy’s father in Africa, where the father was a ruthless mercenary. Mother Julian had tried to get the father to donate a considerable sum to charity or she would expose him. This drove the father to murder Mother Thomas, mistaking her for Mother Julian. Father Behan was silenced in case something had come out in confession.
