David Maxwell invented and built the Maxmobile, it was the first car designed and built entirely by one man. Maxwell built everything on the Maxmobile by hand, back in 1900, from the hickory wheels to the single-cylinder engine. The car included a carburetor and springs for a suspension system. He built a radiator for the engine cooling system, which he later adapted for indoor heating uses. His first design used a tiller for steering but later models used a conventional wheel.
As an inventor, blacksmith, tinkerer and mechanic, David Maxwell might have become one of Canada's richest men had he not said no to Henry Ford and Sam McLaughlin to their offers to work with them more than 100 years ago.
Even after turning down the two automotive titans, Maxwell kept building his cars and eventually finished six or seven of them. Only one is still in existence and it still runs.
His final version, built around 1912, is now on display at the Watford Museum.

David Maxwell was born August 10, 1861. Orphaned at an early age he ended up in Watford, Ontario, Canada working as a blacksmith for John Baimbridge. Eventually he bought some land across the street and started his own blacksmith shop and built the building himself, which still stands today more than 120 years later. David Maxwell invented lots of things, not the least of which was one of the first cars in Canada. He built the entire car, every part, from the engine to the wheels. He built about half a dozen models and only one remains today. From: (visit link)
