From the NPS Visitor Center entrance at Hanger 1, go to the west and follow the path to the original brick gates. On the end of the north gate is this vertically mounted benchmark from 1945. To keep that in perspective, the U.S. Army was still training African American pilots for service in World War II as part of the Tuskegee Airmen units.

DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1968 3.4 MI NE FROM TUSKEGEE. ABOUT 2.8 MILES NORTHEAST ALONG STATE HIGHWAY 81 FROM THE COURTHOUSE AT TUSKEGEE, THENCE ABOUT 0.4 MILE SOUTHEAST ALONG A BLACK TOPPED ROAD, THENCE ABOUT 0.15 MILE EAST ALONG A BLACK TOPPED DRIVE TO THE OLD MOTON AIR BASE, SET VERTICALLY IN THE NORTHEAST END OF THE BRICK ARCH ON THE NORTHEAST SIDE OF THE DRIVE AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE OLD AIR BASE (NOW ANIMAL EXPERIMENT STATION OF TUSKEGEE INSTITUTE), 21 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE DRIVE, 5 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND AND ABOUT 5 FEET ABOVE THE LEVEL OF THE DRIVE.
