A Cemetery with Burials Dating Back to the 1800s. Located at 6086 Taylor Street, Just East of the North End of Main Street on Chincoteague Island, VA.

No, this isn't a Native American cemetery although some buried here may have a Native American heritage! Research the history of the Red Men online...it's interesting. Described as "America's oldest fraternal organization, chartered by Congress, the fraternity traces its origins back to 1765 and is descended from the Sons of Liberty" (see Waymarking category description). According to Genealogy & Historie Of The Eastern Shore(www.esva.net/ghotes/estrivia.htma), a Red Men lodge with 66 members was organized on Chincoteague Island in 1891.
A grave marker on the right side of the cemetery driveway, about midway back, for Eba Lewis indicates Lewis died on August 27, 1888. Can you find and photograph a date of death on a grave marker before that date in this cemetery?
Please respect the graves and their markers. Do not chalk, etch, rub or otherwise disturb the markers.
Avoid walking on graves between larger headstones and smaller footstones. Avoid personal injury; watch for holes and dips in the ground. Maintain control of children.
CAUTION: Wear shoes when visiting island cemeteries. Prickly Pear cactus grow wild here!
