Kennan State Graded School built in 1900 burned to the ground in March of 1944. A new two-room brick building was erected on the same location and opened for use in 1946. In 1946 only the grades 5-8 were in the new building. Grades 1-4 were still in the the 4 one-room school buildings. Between 1946 and 1961 the 4 one-room school houses would close in the town. In 1961, six new classrooms were added, plus a Large gymnasium. In 1976 there were 163 students enrolled in the kennan Elementary School.
In 2002 the school closed and in 2006 sold to become the NEW HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH.
