Chesapeake Energy began modestly in 1989 with ten employees and a $50,000 capital investment, located in a 6,000 square foot building. Today, they are the 2nd-largest producer of natural gas, and the most active driller of new wells in the U.S. With an 111-acre campus of buildings on N. Western Avenue, they have over 4600 employees and office space of more than 1,000,000 square feet. Their employees have access to three on-campus restaurants, and a 72,000 square foot fitness center.

Chesapeake is actively involved in supporting their community. They have formal programs for employee volunteering, serving in the local food banks and working with other non-profit organizations. The company supports college scholarship programs (In 2010, the company gave $5.4 million to support education endeavors). Chesapeake's name can be seen on many plaques around town, as a supporter of cultural and academic endeavors.

The Chesapeake Arena in downtown OKC is the scene of numerous concerts and sporting events, and is the home of the Oklahoma City Thunder Basketball team. The Chesapeake Boathouse on the Oklahoma River south of Bricktown, is an event center and fitness center, with classes in physical exercise and sports, bicycle rentals and rowing and kayaking rental and instruction.

During December, the campus of Chesapeake Energy, and the streets surrounding it are filled with Christmas lights as every tree is covered with lights of all colors. Music is piped out over the campus, and this has become "The" place to visit during the Christmas season.

It's no wonder Chesapeake was given a slot on the Oklahoma Centennial Monopoly board. They have come to represent all that is exciting, innovative and forward-moving in Oklahoma.

On the monopoly board photo in the Gallery, Chesapeake is the 4th spot from the left on the bottom of the board.
