From the descriptive marker on site:

"Easy to transport and having an effective range of over a mile, the 3 inch Ordinance Rifle (Model 1861) was considered to be one of the most advanced pieces of Civil War artillery. Patented in 1855 by John Griffen of the Phoenix Iron Company, the barrel of the 3 inch Ordnance Rifle was constructed by weaving individual strips of wrought iron into a criss-cross pattern, giving the barrel great resistance to bursting.

The multi-grooved barrel of the 3 inch Ordnance Rifle allowed its gun crew to utlize a variety of rifled projectiles, such as the Hotchkiss shell and the Schenkl Shell. Although the 3 inch Ordnance Rifle was not used here during the Civil War, its presence here in the 1870's served as a deterrent from attack as the fort continued its role in the Indian Wars.
