The Turks Head Inn is a substantial three-storey building located on the Market Square in the town centre of Alston. It was established in 1679, as attested to on the pub sign which is mounted on the front wall of the pub between the upstairs windows. There has been a modern covered area added to the front as a porch. Currently a free house, it advertises Boddington Traditional Ales.
The front lounge area is complete with original feature stone fireplace and a beamed ceiling which is served by a bar serving both this and the rear lounge which also features a stone fireplace and beamed ceiling.
Quiz nights are held every Tuesday with live music - folk and 60s - every month. There is a darts board and tv in the lounge. Currently food is not served but there is a choice of real ales on offer, which varies with season, a selection of wines, and, usually three draught beers.
The usual 'Turk's Head' inn sign shows the head of a turkish soldier dressed in suitable attire. In this case the 'Turks Head' is a decorative knot made round the rim of a ship's wooden wheel marking the rudder central position. The knot takes its name from a notional resemblance to a turban.
