Initially known as the Susquehanna and South Western Railroad Company, the Beech Creek railroad as it would later be named began construction on the tunnel on June 24th, 1883. Both ends of the portal met on October 30th, 1883. The rail line itself ran from Jersey Shore, PA into New York state. The tunnel gets its name from the former town of Peale that is no longer in existence.
The railroad was leased to the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company on December 15th, 1890 and eventually acquired by New York Central in May of 1948. Conrail would be the last company to provide rail service to the Peale area after the merger and bankruptcy of Pennsylvania and New York Central railroad. The last train to pass through the area occurred in 1993. Track removal began in 1993. The Snow Shoe Trail Association now owns the rail right of way and has opened the tunnel and rail bed for hikers, bikers and ATV riders.
