Built between 1874 and 1876 to download the ore extracted from the Rio Tinto mines located in the North of the province of Huelva. The pier has a total length of 1,165 meters, in part over the river Odiel (about 500 meters) and part on land. It was the endpoint of a railway from the mines (over 84 kilometres, ending at the port of the city) transporting the ore to Huelva.
The pier remained in service until 1975, over 150 million tonnes of ore were embarked during the years of operation.
The Muelle de mineral de la compañía Riotinto was built by the English engineers Sir George Barclay Bruce (Member of Institution of Civil Engineers of London) and Thomas Gibson.
