In Windsor, near where US Route 5 crosses Mill Brook and by a multi-story brick factory, is a waterfall over a ledge that marked the dam that held water for that factory.
The waterfall looks natural enough - the water flows off an uneven stone ledge to a lower level about 12 feet below. Flanking the falls are two concrete structures about 12 feet high, indicating that the falls at one time were higher. But, removing the structure returned the water to its natural level and falls. This location is known as the middle dam. The brook falls over ledges at three locations before entering the Connecticut River not far from this location.
These falls are pretty. The best place to view the falls is from an area between the brick mill building, known as the Robbins and Lawrence Armory and Tool Company, and the US Route 5 bridge. This provides a face on view from about 200 feet away. You can get closer by going in back of the mill to the parking area there and look, but your view is partially blocked by overgrown vegetation. There is a short path that starts from the corner of the building, but be very careful as there is a significant drop here and there are no handrails.
