The 28 foot wheel was installed in 1992 in the wheel-pit of the old tinplate works waterwheel which had broken up and generates 25Kw. Together with a turbine (not on view) it generates electricity 24 hours a day, powereing local facilities and the excess is sold to the national grid.
The wheel is believed to be the largest operational power generating wheel in Europe.
