The city market on the market place in front of the medieval city hall in the center of Basel is open six days a week:
Mon, Wed, Fri 08.30 - 19.00
Tue, Thu, Sat 08.30 - 13.30 (2nd and last Sat of the month until 18.00)
closed on public holidays.
Most of the stands are from local farmers who sell a broad varitety of fresh grown local products. Depending on the season this includes vegetables, fruits, berries, mushrooms, honey and flowers. There are also stands from local producers with bread and other bakery products, dairy products, sausages and basketry. Finally some producers of specialities from neighboring regions and some food stalls.
The early history of this market dates back to medieval times and is undocumented. It was first mentioned in 1191. The place was divided by a small river these days, it was covered to create a single place around 1231. In the beginning this place was dedicated to grain, wood and wine; vegetables and other food products had their market at another location until the 15th century. The place was much smaller then, it was extended and nearly doubled in size in 1891.
