"Gelegen in Südtirol, gehörig zum italienischen Staatsgebiet zeigt der Vinschgau als Talsystem in seinem geographischen Aufbau eine eindrucksvolle Einheitlichkeit und einfache, klare Linienführung.
Das kommt daher, dass er zur Gänze im Bereich der Zentralalpen liegt, einem Gebirgsabschnitt von ähnlicher Gesteinsbeschaffenheit und verhältnismäßig einheitlichem geologischen Schicksal.
Er misst in der Länge zwischen Reschenpass (1.508 m) und Talenge Töll (520 m) rund 75 km. Die begrenzenden Gebirge sind die Ötztaler Alpen und Texelgruppe (N), Münstertaler Alpen (W) und die Ortlergruppe (S).
Der von quartären Schuttablagerungen bedeckte Talboden des Vinschgaus nimmt eine Fläche von 122 km² ein. Es gibt nur zwei hügelartige Erhebungen, die der Gewalt der Eiszeit-Gletscher widerstanden haben und heute aus dem Talboden in die Höhe ragen. Das sind ein kleiner Hügel neben der Ortschaft Laas sowie im oberen Vinschgau der Tartscher Bühel, im Volksmund Bichl genannt, bei der Ortschaft Tartsch.
Er ist ein kahler, felsiger, 1.077 m hoher Rundbuckel aus Glimmerschiefer in der Vinschgauer Schieferzone. Seine abgerundete Form hat er durch Gletschereinwirkung während der Eiszeit erhalten. In den Felsenmulden des Hügels haben die Gletscher Moränenablagerungen zurückgelassen.
Der Bühel ist aber auch eine mythen- und sagenumwobene Erhebung, die den Archäologen und Historikern manchen Lichtblick beschert hat. So fand man ein Hirschhorn mit rätischer Inschrift, Eigentum des ältesten bezeugten Vinschgauers, der vor ca. 2.000 Jahren lebte und den keltischen Namen Riviselchu trug.

"Located in South Tyrol and belonging to the Italian territory, the valley system of Vinschgau shows in its geographical structure a striking uniformity as well as simple and clear lines.
The reason is that it entirely lies in the Central Alps, a mountainous section of similar rock composition and relatively uniform geological fate.
It measures between Reschenpass (1,508 m) and the narrow section of the valley at Töll (520 m) about 75 km. The adjacent mountains are the Ötztal Alps and the Texel Group (N), the Münstertal Alps (W) and the Ortler Group (S).
The valley bottom of Vinschgau, covered by Quaternary deposits of debris, covers an area of 122 square kilometers. There are only two elevations, which have resisted the force of Ice Age glaciers and stick out of the valley bottom today. This is a small hill near the village of Laas and the Tartscher Bühel, popularly known as Bichl, in the upper Vinschgau near the town Tartsch.
It is a bald, craggy and 1,077 m high ‘round hump’ of mica schist in the Vinschgau shale zone. Its rounded form is the result of glacial action during the Ice Age. In the rocky hollows of the hill, the glacier left moraine deposits behind.
The Bühel is also a myth surrounded and legendary elevation, which has brought the archaeologists and historians some ray of hope. So they found a staghorn with Rhaetian inscription, ownership of the oldest verified Vinschgau resident, who lived about 2,000 years ago and wore the Celtic name Riviselchu.
