Along a rural road that is Route 124 - from either side - is the state border at Townsend, Massachusetts and Mason, New Hampshire.

The marker is located on the east side of the road, which is the right side as you approach New Hampshire. There is a turnoff next to the marker just on the New Hampshire side.

There are several signs around the stone marker. The stone marker is about 2 1/2 ft tall and about 1 1/2 ft wide on each side. On the north face is the text: "T MASS 1894." On the south face is the text: "M NH 1894." Thus, the text faces as you are entering that town and state. On the top is a line scored across the face likely showing the exact direction of the state line.

The marker itself is in good condition. There is '98' painted on the north side and the 'T' has been painted as well. The corners show signs of chipping.

It appears as a cornerstone on the Ashby Quad topographic map. The line separating Massachusetts and New Hampshire changed until 1640 when it was established as a series of curves 3 miles north of the Merrimack River to a point north of present day Lowell, where it then goes approximately straight west to the corner with Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York.
