This paddenstoel was presented by Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet and Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven as a gift of friendship to the City of Calgary in the Spring of 2010.
The Princess was born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1943 at the time that Germany was occupying the Netherlands. At the time the maternity ward of Ottawa Civic Hospital was temporarily declared to be extraterritorial by the Canadian government. Making the maternity ward outside of the Canadian domain caused it to be unaffiliated with any jurisdiction and technically international territory. This was done to ensure that the newborn Princess would derive her citizenship from her mother only, thus making her solely Dutch. (see: (

For Canadian visitors, to this waymark, the ANWB is the road service company in the Netherlands.
