This church is closely related to Henry Patillo, who was a promenent early figure in the Presbyterian Church.

Hawfields congregation formed around 1755. The orginal church was about three miles from its present location. The current sanctuary was built in 1852 with several newer buildings on the site as well. A large church cemetery stands across the road from Hawfields and a state historic marker records the church's importance in North Carolina history.
