First Hotel
This is the south wing of First Hotel, one of the earliest hotels in Nauvoo. First Hotel was also refered to as City Hotel, Mill's Tavern (after hotel keeper Alexander Mills), and Masonic Hall Hotel.
As Nauvoo's mayor, Joseph Smith participated in citycourts held in the Red Brick Store. On one occasion: While the couort was in session two boys were seen fighting in the street by Mill's tavern. The Mayor [Joseph Smith Jr.] saw it and ran over immediately, caught one of the boys and stopped him and then the other. [Joseph] gave the bystanders a lecture for not interfering in such cases and returned to court. "Nobody is allowed to fight in this city but me," said the Mayor.
