In addition to the names the monument text reads:
"Duty and Sacrifice
Valparaiso Area Public Safety - Lives Lost in the Line of Duty"
There are also two quotes from local children engraved on the monument.

The memorial consists of a fountain and four black granite monuments, which honor Charity, Friendship, Hope and Duty and Sacrifice. One side of the Duty and Sacrifice monument is etched with the names of 158 military personnel from Porter County who died in combat. The other side shows names of local police officers, firefighters and emergency workers who died in the line of duty.

Arranged around the fountain, the other granite monuments honoring Friendship, Hope and Charity do not bear any names. Instead, they mark the place where bricks are placed honoring people who exemplify those qualities.

The granite is from the same company that provided the granite for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in D.C.
