The following information is based on information on the Town of Sidney website. See (visit link)

The shield on the town flag has the sloop, H.M.S. Plumper, in the centre. The upper part of the shield is blue showing two arrowheads with clasped hands between them. H.M.S. Plumper, commanded by Captain George Henry Richards, was a Royal Navy survey vessel. In 1859 Captain Richards surveyed Sidney Island and Sidney Channel. The arrowhead on the upper right was Salish Natives while on the left the blue barbed arrowhead was from the Sidney family's coat-of-arms. The clasped hands between them symbolized the friendship between the First Nations and the settlers.

On April 26, 1999, the Town's Flag was granted and sealed by the Chief Herald of Canada, of the Canadian Heraldic Authority, and entered into the Public Register of Arms, Flags and Badges of Canada.
