Buer glacier - Glaciers on Waymarking.com

To get to Buer take road 13, which is the main road to Røldal, from the center of Odda. After 2 km, just before the bridge over the Opo river, you take a right turn in the direction of Odda camping and Buer. After the camping the road continues along the Sandvinsvatnet lake and after the bridge it continues into the Buer Valley. You can park your car at the Buer farm. Up until now (July 2012) there is no parking fee.
There is a footpath marked by red T's to the edge of the glacier through the wild, lush and beautiful valley of Buer between towering mountains. The hike takes approx. 3 hours return. Remember to wear good hiking boots!
Be cautious and follow the instructions. Do not step on or go too close to the glacier, it is constantly in motion!

Folgefonna is a collective term for three plateau glaciers in Hardanger, Norway. These are: Nordre (northern) Folgefonna, Midtre (central) Folgefonna and Søndre (southern) Folgefonna. In total these three consitute an area of 213 km2.
May 2005 Folgefonna National Park was established, protecting the glaciers and the surrounding areas. The glacier is home to a summer skiing resort, located on its northern region. The largest outflow glaciers from Folgefonna are Blomstølskardbreen, Bondhusbreen and Buerbreen. Since around 1960 Blomstølskardbreen on the southern end of Folgefonna has changed only insignificant. Bondhusbreen and Buerbreen further north were growing in the 1990s, but have been retreating since the year 2000. Buerbreen however has recently started to grow again: 100 meters in the last 6 to 8 years.
The water from the melting ice collects into a small river and flows into Sandvevatnet.

Normally it is near impossible and very dangerous to go near a glacier without a lot of professional equipment and an experienced guide. Buer glacier is one of the very few glaciers in the world where it is possible to go up right to the foot and see for yourself what a glacier looks like, with just a couple of good hiking shoes and a bit of persistence.
