This Peace Pole was dedicated by the United Methodist Church of Carthage, on September 11, 2011. It stands in front of the Church, facing Main Street. It is a four sided pole that reads:
"May Peace Prevail on Earth"
The other side facing the road is written in Russian. I would assume that when interpreted, it would say the same thing, but google translate doesn't look anything like what is on the pole.
From the UMC Missions Committee minutes from June 13, 2011, we find the following:
"Reverend Smith brought up the fact that September 11, 2001, will be the 10th anniversary of the 911 disaster. He presented information regarding a Peace Pole Project be installed close to the garden area outside. “A Peace Pole proclaims the prayer May Peace Prevail on Earth in the language of the country you choose. When you plant a Peace Pole in your community, you are linking with people all over the world who have planted Peace Poles in the same spirit of peace.” There are different styles and sizes. Jim moved to pursue this project, John seconded, motion carried." (

Clearly, they followed through on the project. It is even featured on the home page of the Church website.
