The Soldiers' and Sailors' Home administration building was finished in 1898 and used until 1995. As you can see from the photos, the building has undergone many changes in the last century besides the overgrown trees. The third story peak has been removed as well as the upper balcony on the east face. Like many of the early buildings in the area, it was constructed out of rhyolite, a locally quarried lava stone. The nhyolite provides a beautiful rich brown texture but the many years of freezing and thawing have taken their toll. The building is currently undergoing renovations to become the new home of the Homelake Museum.
