This fort is also known as Forte de Santo António da Pedra da Galé and it was built on a spot previously used by a fortification from the Roman times (either by the Romans or by a local enemy tribe).
The modern fort was built in 1571, as a measure to defend the area against the incursions of pirates sailing from North Africa.
It was actually this fort which originated the modern city of Armação de Pera, as people started to build around the original military bastion, seeking for safety.
Around 1720 the chapel of Santo António, still in perfect conditions, was built inside the fort patio. Santo António is the protector saint of the fort.
As with so many old structures, the fort was severely damaged by the earthquake of 1755, but it was rebuilt some years later.
Nowadays there isn't much of it remaining. The entrance arch, the space and a terrace with views over the ocean, besides the mentioned chapel.
It was classified and National Heritage in 1978.
