After a phone call from a mystery gentleman one of the girls, Celia, tries to find a valuable ring in the school library in exchange for £20,000. The other girls catch Celia in the act and consult the headmistress, Camella Fritton. Camella tells the girls the story about Pirate Fritton, her ancestor, who had buried treasure. The secret of the treasure location can be had if two rings are brought together, one of them being the one in the library.
The man on the phone is Sir Piers Pomfrey, a descendant of a man robbed by Pirate Fritton. He makes another attempt on the ring and succeeds. The girls decide to try and find the second ring. An important clue is found which, when deciphered, leads the girls to find the second ring.
In order to get the first ring back from Sir Piers, Camilla recruits Geoffrey Thwaites, an old flame, to help. Geoffrey knows that Sir Piers is a member of a secret society, called AD1. After an unsuccessful raid on AD1, Geoffrey manages to get the ring back from Sir Piers.
The two rings reveal where the treasure is buried and the girls, Camilla and Geoffrey head off to find it. The treasure chest is not full of gold, however, but further secrets. Sir Piers manages to snatch the secrets, but is again thwarted by the girls of St Trinians after a boat chase.
