In the downtown section of Providence is Providence City Hall, which was investigated by The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) on Ghost Hunters in February 2012 after reports that it was haunted.

Providence City Hall is located in the block bounded by Dorrance, Washington, Eddy and Fulton Streets, and faces Dorrance and a plaza that features a Civil War memorial. The building certainly looks as if it could be haunted. The grey stone with ornate decorations and a green copper roof have a sort of gothic appearance.

According to the show, the city hall was haunted by a former mayor that was laid to rest in the building. There were reports of cigar smell, as well.

The actual investigation yielded little. A scream was heard during the session, and there might have been some voices recorded. However, the cigar smoke was determined to be some wood within the building that might release aromas when the heat kicked on. There was also a chair that seemed to move on its own - might just take time to adjust after someone sat up from it.

As far as hauntings, this seems to be low and 'not supported.' The episode will probably be known more for the fact that one of the founders of TAPS, Grant Wilson, is leaving. Shadowlands and other haunting sites did not list Providence City Hall, but did list many other locations including Benefit Street and various buildings of Johnson & Wales and Providence College. So, there is plenty more to explore in Providence.

But, if you happen to be in Providence City Hall and hear a voice, or smell the smoke of a cigar, maybe it is something more than just random circumstances - maybe there IS a mayor still walking about the halls of city hall!
