Elspeth McGillicuddy is one her way by train to visit Miss Marple. When her train passes by another train, going the same way, she sees a man strangling a woman on the other train. The police find no evidence of a murder, so it is down to Miss Marple to investigate.

Train timetables indicate that the trains would be passing Rutherford Hall at the time of the murder. A friend of Miss Marple, Lucy Eyelesbarrow, is despatched to Rutherford Hall to gain access as a housekeeper. Rutherford Hall is inhabited by the Crackenthorpe family. The head of the family is the ailing Luther with a brood of fratching sons and daughters.

Lucy searches the grounds of the Hall on behalf of Miss Marple and finds the dead woman’s body in the family sarcophagus. Her identity is a mystery, but she is probably French, based on her clothes. There is speculation that it might be Martine, a girl that was engaged to one of the sons, Edmund, that died at Dunkirk. A letter from Martine indicates that she may have had a child by Edmund, meaning the child could inherit Rutherford Hall. At first the police believe the woman is Martine, but Miss Marple produces Lady Stoddart West, the real Martine, alive and well.

Lucy cooks a curry for the evening meal and the family all become ill. Arsenic poisoning is suspected. The family recover except for Alfred, who dies in Dr Quimper’s arms. Dr Quimper is the family doctor and is also to be engaged to one of the daughters of the house.

After the murder of Alfred, on the instructions of Miss Marple, Lucy organises a trip for the family to see Noel Coward in London. On the train Miss Marple produces some fish paste sandwiches. Suddenly Miss Marple feigns having a fish bone stuck in her throat. Dr Quimper comes to her assistance, just as another train runs along side Miss Marple’s train. On the other train is Mrs McGillicuddy who recognises Dr Quimper. It would appear that the murdered woman was Dr Quimper’s wife, who would not give him a divorce so that he could remarry.
