Kate Croy is taken in by her rich Aunt Maude on condition she does not see her father or her lover, journalist Merton Densher. Merton wants to marry Kate, but Kate does not want to give up her life style.
Aunt Maude is fond of giving parties, and at one of her parties Kate meets Lord Mark, a man with a crumbling country house, who wants to marry the rich American heiress Millie Theale. Kate becomes friends with Millie, and soon realises that Millie is terminally ill. She devises a plan, similar to Lord Mark’s, of getting Merton to befriend Millie, inherit Millie’s money and then marry her.
Merton is a man of principle and resists Kate’s plan. The trio go to Venice on holiday, but Kate returns early to leave Merton with Millie. Millie does fall for Merton, but Kate becomes jealous and tells Lord Mark of Merton’s interest. Lord Mark goes to Venice and spills the beans to Millie. Millie does not believe Lord Mark and leaves her money to Merton before she dies.
Kate and Merton do eventually get back together, but Merton insists on givimg the money back. Kate insists that Merton gives up his memory of Millie in return.
