Hochwasser in Würzburg treten beinahe jährlich auf. (1845,1909, aber auch in den letzten 20 Jahren). Der Main kann dabei nach langanhaltenden Niederschlägen oder nach der Schneeschmelze hohe Wasserstände erreichen. Bei einem Jahrhundert-Hochwasser tritt der Main in Würzburg bis an das Rathaus heran und überflutet eine Altstadtfläche von etwa 25 Hektar; das Wasser kann sogar fast bis zum Dom hinaufgelangen.
Die Stadt ist deswegen bemüht, einen sicheren Schutz gegen das Hochwasser zu errichten. Die Arbeiten an einem kompletten Hochwasserschutz, um ein hundertjährliches Hochwasser abhalten zu können, wurden 1971 begonnen und bis 2009 vollendet.
