People think more about cattle in Kingsville -- after all, the famous Santa Gertrudis and Santa Rosa breeds were developed on the King Ranch. The history of this world-famous iconic ranch began when Capt. Richard King and his partner Mifflin Kenedy bought all the longhorn cattle in the Mexican village of Cruillas, intending to drive them all north to his ranch in Texas. Realizing that without the cattle the villagers would starve, Capt. King brought them too. These folks became the famed Kinenos, vaqueros of the King Ranch.

With all the cattle history in Kingsville, folks need to be reminded that it's not all about the moo. The King Ranch bred several famous racehorses in the 1940s and 50s: 1946 US Triple Crown winner Assault and 1950 Kentucky Derby winner Middleground. The King Ranch also raised Wimpy P-1, the first quarter horse registered with the American Quarter Horse Association.

This horse has a humbler purpose than the famed horses of the King Ranch - to advertise a local feed store. However, he is still noble, and worthy of waymarking. Just pull off the US 77 and ask how the weather is up there!
