The original Friars School was established in 1557 on land once owned by the Black Friars.

In 1789 a new building was built close to the original site and this is where the tablet is located.

In 1900 the school moved to yet another location and the old school building/site became St. Mary's Church House.

In 1995 St. Marys Church House was demolished to make may for the current block of flats. The tablet was preserved and incorporated into the modern building.

The text on the tablet reads:

1557 1957

THE FOURTH CENTENARY OF FRIARS SCHOOL,

BY THE SCHOOL FROM 1789 TO 1900.
