While logging benchmarks located on the Chetco River Bridge, I noticed a plaque that was dedicated to B.A. 'DOT' Martin by the Oregon State Highway Commission. The plaque reads:
DEDICATED IN HONOR OF
B.A. "DOT" MARTIN
BY ACTION OF
OREGON STATE
HIGHWAY COMMISSION
AUG. 8, 1972
In researching B.A. Martin, the only information I could find was that he was a chief engineer with the Oregon State Highway Department in the 1930s and he was involved in the construction of the Yaquina Bridge in Newport, OR. My guess is that he also had a direct hand in the construction of the original Chetco River Bridge before it was destroyed and rebuilt with the current bridge, which is dedicated to him.
There are two plaques dedicated to Dot Martin and one of them looks to be a replacement plaque, located in the NE corner of the bridge. The older plaque is located in the SW corner of the bridge. Both plaques say the same thing.
