This is a brand new dam, inaugurated in June 2012. Ironically there are plans for the building of such a dam which are now 40 years old. This dam is the largest of the region. It guarantees water for this region for 3 years in case of extreme drought (0 mm of precipitation).
Águas de Portugal, the company responsible for water distribution in Algarve, manages this dam.
