This multi panel black marble memorial is located on the southwestern grounds of the Franklin County Courthouse - 315 S. Main in Ottawa, Kansas. The memorial itself consists of six black marble engraved slabs with the names of the men from Franklin County killed in the separate conflicts starting with World War I, These marble slabs are supported and separated by cut stone pillars. The middle stone has carved the Seals of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Merchant Marines, Coast Guard & Seabees surrounding an inverted rifle with a helmet resting on the butt of the rifle. The verse - Greater love hath no man than this. That a man lay down his own life for his friends. John 15:13 - is at the bottom of this slab. The memorial has a low wall that allows for seating on the west. Concrete work and marble tile mark a circular plaza area with a raised middle area with plantings and a flagpole - unlighted. A dedication plaque is embedded within this circular area. Access to the memorial is via a memorial brickway with the names of many people and organizations listed.

This is a very well done, and understated memorial. It allows for the reflection of the sacrifice of the brave residents of Franklin County listed on the stark black planels.
