John Peel (1777-1854) was a farmer and avid huntsman in the Caldbeck area. He is buried in St Kentigern’s churchyard in Caldbeck.

He was immortalized in the song D’ye ken John Peel, written by Peel’s friend John Woodcock Graves. The original song was penned in local cumbrian dialects. The more definitive version was written by George Coward, a Carlisle bookseller, and published in 1866 in a book Songs and Ballads of Cumberland.

The music for the lyric was provided by the tune of a scots rant, Bonnie Annie. By 1906 the song had been included in the National Song Book and became popular nationally.

The first verse and chorus are best known:

D'ye ken John Peel with his coat so gay?
D'ye ken John Peel at the break o' day?
D'ye ken John Peel when he's far, far a-way.
With his hounds and his horn in the morning?

Chorus

For the sound of his horn brought me from my bed,
And the cry of his hounds which he oftime led,
Peel's "View, Halloo!" could awaken the dead,
Or the fox from his lair in the morning.
