The bobbin mill began in 1857 and lasted in production until 1924. Power for the mill was by means of the water wheel, 42 feet in diameter and 3 feet wide, believed to be the second largest wheel in the country. At its height of production the mill employed sixty people making bobbins, handles for tools and dollys. The raw material was the wood from the coppiced woodland of the Caldbeck valley.
