The Hallettsville New Poor Farm Cemetery was established in 1896 on land owned by Lavaca County Texas. It operated until 1958. There is only one marked grave in the cemetery, but county records detail who was buried here, since all were buried at county expense.
Jerry and Joeann Fabrygel, descendants of Anton Fabrygel (whose grave is the only marked grave in the cemetery) began researching the history of the cemetery. They used Lavaca Co. government records to discover the names and birth/death dates of the others buried in the cemetery. The Fabrygels applied to the State of Texas for Historic Cemetery status for this burial ground. Their request was approved in 2002.
