William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield (September 9, 1839 – January 6, 1921) was the patriarch of the Hatfield clan during the infamous Hatfield–McCoy feud which has since formed a part of American folklore. Devil Anse himself survived the feud and agreed to end the feud in 1891.

Hatfield died on Thursday, January 6, 1921 in Stirrat, Logan County, West Virginia at the age of 81 of pneumonia at his home along Island Creek. He is buried in the Hatfield Family Cemetery along West Virginia Route 44 in southern Logan County. His grave is topped by this life-sized statue of himself made of Italian marble.

From the SIRIS website:

Inscription: (Base, east front:) JOHNSON/WM. A./ROBERT L./NANCY/ELLIOT R./MARY/ELIZABETH/ELIAS/TROY/JOSEPH D./ROSE/WILLIS E./TENNIS S./THEIR CHILDREN/HATFIELD (Base, west rear:) Capt. Anderson/Hatfield/1839-1921/Levicy Chafin/his wife/1842-1929.

Description: A full-length portrait of Devil Anse Hatfield as an older man. He stands erect with his heels close together and his arms at his sides. He has a moustache and a flowing beard. He wears a thigh-length coat with lapels, a narrow tie which is slightly off-center, a tie clip, and high-waisted pants tucked into buttoned leggings. A tree stump is positioned behind his proper left leg and extends to just above his knee.

Remarks: The sculpture, modelled from photographs taken after Hatfield's death, was imported from Italy at a cost of $3,000. Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield (1839-1921) was a leader of a Hatfield faction in the Hatfield-McCoy feud. IAS files contain related articles from Comstock, Jim, ed., "The West Virginia Heritage Encyclopedia, Vol. 10 and 11," Richwood, WV: Jim Comstock, 1974, pg. 468; and two unidentified articles. The statue was reportedly purchased by McCoy descendants and its dedication marked a formal "treaty" between the Hatfields and McCoys.
