We visited the Times Journal headquarters to see the Quilt Block Sundial, WMF61H. I am in the picture with a few of my friends from the North American Sundial Society. This is the only picture I took that shows the Times Journal Headquarters.
We were welcomed by Jody Higgins, editor/publisher of the Times Journal and given copies of the latest edition as well as the "Heart of the Blue Ridge Visitors Guide". The Yancey County Common Times was established in 1990 by Jody Higgins. In 1995 it mergered with the Yancey Journal to continues a long tradition of community newspapers in Yancey County going back to 1886 with the Black Mountain Eagle. The history is detailed here (

The newspaper was well written and edited with lots of local stories. It also had lots of local advertisers, so important in the survival of newspapers. It remains in business operating on a shoestring.
The Times Journal sponsored the Quilt Block Sundial on the south side of the building. There are now over 200 quilt blocks painted on barns and buildings on the Western North Carolina Quilt Block Trails in Yancey and Madison County. The Sundial is perhaps the best known. It is what drew our group to Burnsville. We were impressed by the initiative, civic pride and cooperative spirit of the people in the hills of Western North Carolina keeping the newspaper going and preserving the folk art of barn quilt blocks.
