Built during the late 1950's by the Québec Cartier Mining Company, the mining town of Gagnon was oficially incorporated January 28, 1960. The town was situated about 350kms. north of Baie-comeau,qc. At the time there was no road to the town, all supplies came in by train from Port-Cartier,Qc. At it's height the town had a population of around 1500 people.
The mine was an iron ore mine, which was shipped to Port-Cartier for transformation and shipping.
The town was closed in 1984,and in 1985 everything was bulldozed and buried.
Two years later, highway 389, from Baie-Comeau to Fermont, was completed and passed right on the main street of the town. So, for 2kms. there is a divided highway, right in the middle of nowhere.
There are signs at both ends of the town and the coordinates were taken halfway in between.
My pictures will show the signs and the divided highway. As we drive by, we can see where the driveways were and where the streets started.
All else is covered with new growth.
