In the summer of 1862 while marching to Culpeper, Virginia, Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson and his troops encountered one of Union Gen. John Pope's divisions under Gen. Nathaniel Banks at Cedar Mountain. In the fight that followed on August 9, the Confederates were in danger of being swept from the battlefield when Jackson rode into battle waving his sword rusted in its scabbard and successfully rallied his men and forced the Federals to retreat.
A stone monument stands on the battlefield. The plaque reads:
BATTLE OF CEDAR MOUNTAIN
FOUGHT AUGUST 9, 1862. A CONFEDERATE VICTORY.

The monument is located near a small parking area on General Winder Rd. in Culpeper County where the battle of Cedar Mountain was fought. Flanked by two boxwoods, the pedestal is within an iron fence with steps leading to the opening.
