Octave Van Rysselberghe was born in Antwerp, Belgium on 22 July 1855 and died in Nice on 30 March 1929. Architect. He studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Ghent and was trained by Adolphe Pauli in the neo-classical tradition, which he freely interpreted by drawing his inspiration from the Italian Renaissance. On his return from a two-year stay in Italy, he received his practical training with Joseph Poelaert on the Palais de Justice site in Brussels before building the Observatoire Royal and a town house (both 1882) for Comte Goblet d'Alviella in Brussels. In 1893 he built a studio for his brother Theo Van Rysselberghe, and it was through the latter's circle of acquaintances that he met the internationalist Paul Otlet (1868-1944), for whom he designed a town house (1894) in Brussels in the Art Nouveau style; here he was assisted by Henry Van de Velde, who was responsible for the interiors. Van Rysselberghe subsequently came to be considered one of the more original exponents of the Art Nouveau style in Belgium. He began to work for the Compagnie des Grands Hôtels Européens, for which, between 1895 and 1905, he built several tourist establishments in Ostend, Cherbourg, Monte Carlo, St Petersburg and Tunis, among other places, and these gave him a wide reputation. The Hotel Belle-Vue (1905) on the sea-front at Westende was designed on a curvilinear plan and exhibited a Mediterranean spirit in its ornamental refinement. Otlet also commissioned from Van Rysselberghe a design for a bathing resort development (1900-03) at Westende, where he built the Kursaal, a development of villas and housing, in a plastic and expressive style using large areas of roofing.
