The Nürburgring has been build in 1927 as race- and testtrack. Its length was about 28.8km consisting of a southern section (Südschleife) and a northern section (Nordschleife) allowing to form four different tracks. The complete track (Gesamtstrecke) has been used in the early years. After WWII races had been held either on the Südschleife (7.7km), the Nordschleife (22.8km) or the short track with a length of 2.2km formed by the startstraight and the backstraight connected by the turning points of Nord- and Südschleife. (Start-Ziel-Schleife or "Betonstrecke")
In the seventies when motorsport became faster and therefore more dangerous, plans has been started to renew the Nürburgring. The Südschleife has closed in 1982 to realise this plans. The result was a modern racetrack and it is said to be the safest one at this time. The length of this section, called Grand-Prix-Strecke, has been 5.1km. The winner of the first race took place on this racetrack was a young driver named Ayrton Senna, the later Formula One champion. The laprecord has been set by Michael Schumacher in 1:29,468m on Ferrari in the year 2004 on the modernized variant of the Grand-Prix-Strecke.
The Nordschleife still exists and even today it is a place of great motorsport and it is used as a testtrack by many automobile manufacturer. The most popular race which is on this section of the track is the 24h race for touring cars. Before the rebuild of the Grand-Prix-Track the lap record was 6:58.6 by Niki Lauda on the 1975 Formula-One Ferrari. After the rebuild the lap record has been set in 1983 by the famous driver Stefan Bellof (who died 5 month later in Spa) in 6:11.13 on Porsche 956.007. This is only lap with an average speed of more than 200km/h ever driven there.
Rests of the Südschleife can be still found in the area of the Nürburgring but You have to know where to look for. For example the lane leading to parking area C3 has been the section "Scharfer Kopf". The lap record of this section has been set by Harald Kelleners in 2:38,6 on March 707 in 1970
The Grand-Prix-Track hosts such popular series like Formula-1, DTM, Oldtimer-Grand-Prix, Truck-Grand-Prix, GT-Masters and many more. Like the old "Ring" its modern counterpart has multiple sections. Besides the complete track there are two short variants (Spring-Strecke and Müllenbach-Schleife).
