Schmidt is a small village in the norther Eifel near the Rur-Lakes. The battle for this area, the Hürtgen-Forest, started in November 1944 and last until Februar 1945. About 70000 solders has been killed on both sides.
The memorial is divided in two parts: On the left side You read the German text
"Sie starben nicht vergeblich denn sie gewannen den Frieden für unsere Völker."
Below the German Flag is shown.
The right side shows the English translation of the German text:
They have not died in vain for they have gained peace between our nations.
Below the text the emblem of the 707th tank battailon and the American flag is shown.
Two hands shaking, made of bronze, connect the sides the memorial symbolizing the beginning friendship between the two nations.
