John S. Lane & Sons, Inc. is a large mining company that operates several large quarries throughout western Massachusetts. Plant #5 is located in an area called the Notch in the Holyoke Range, a mountain pass between Bear Mountain to the west and Mt. Norwottuck to the east.
This quarry is an open pit mine that produces crushed stone used primarily for road construction. The source rock is basalt which is also referred to as trap-rock. The mine area around the Notch has been renewed. Old structures have been torn down and this no sign marks the location of the quarry to the east.
Due to constant blasting and heavy truck traffic, access to the open pit is restricted. However you can see the truck weighing station and some of the operation from the non-restricted area.
Type of Stone/Ore mined: basalt (trap-rock) / crushed stone
