This is one of two animal memorials for the Uniontown Police Department, which are both located on the front lawn of the Uniontown Public Safety Building.
Sheiko , a 10-year-old Dutch shepherd with five years of service as a member the city's K-9 unit, died suddenly in 2008. To honor Sheiko , council presented his handler a plaque that will also serve as a memorial.
Shieko was also a part of litigation against the city, the former mayor, the police chief, Shieko's handler and a few other fellow officers in 2006 by a suspect that the department had ordered to attack the individual, who was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and later taunting the service animal, when the suspect, along with a few other individuals were gathered in front of a former grocery store in the west end of the city.
The litigation took almost two years to settle, which the city did in federal court. By dismissing the mayor, police chief, and the captain of the police department before the settlement, which city council voted and agreed upon, but claimed no wrongdoing in the attack.
