This monument is placed in memory of Nero, a service animal with seven years to the Uniontown Police Department.

Nero , a Dutch Malinois, came from Holland to Uniontown in 1995, when he was 3 years old. He and his partner patrolled town, looked for missing people, went to standoff situations, and visited schools for anti-drug programs and assemblies.

Nero had several accounts with the Uniontown PD when he saved the life of not only his handler, but several other officers of the force.

But when Nero was off-duty, he was simply part of the handler's family. He became known as Bubba -- a name change the handler's wife and daughters made. Nero had his own room at his handler's house. Their Christmas card pictures included the handler's children, and Nero . He was a protector of the handler's family, who the officer's children grew up with.

In 2002, Nero retired as his handler had been promoted within the Police Department, which meant more desk work. And Nero was starting to slow down.Nero passed away in April 2005, when he fell and hurt himself. The veterinarian said he'd never walk again The handler's family decided to let him go.

But they, their family and friends, police officers and firefighters had to say a last goodbye, and that they did a a local funeral home in June 2005.
