The Silesian Theatre
The first information about theatrical performances in Opava dates back to 1630. The foundation stone of the Silesian Theatre was laid on 1st May 1804, the building was finished on 1st October 1805. The theatre was later rebuilt in years 1882 – 1883 according to the design of Eduard Labický. After it had burned down on 16th June 1909 the interior of the theatre was newly designed by F. Moser. Further changes, this time of the fronting, were carried out after 1945.
The professional Czech theatre ensemble started performing on 30th September 1945, opera ensemble started on 27th October of the same year. In years 1955 to 1957 an administrative building was added. In 1986 preparations for an overall reconstruction were commenced and finally from January 1990 to September 1992 the overall reconstruction of the theatre took place. The Silesian Theatre has two ensembles – drama and opera.
